About Us

Why Use BJC Hospice?

BJC Hospice gives terminally ill patients the opportunity to live their life among those they love. It’s treatment with the goal of managing pain, providing comfort and offering support when seeking a cure is no longer an option. We care for patients of all ages. Both adult and pediatric hospice patients have access to much needed options for end of life care. Whether adults, teens or children, our focus is on maximizing love and comfort while minimizing pain, fear and uncertainty.

Living among those who love you

Hospice care through BJC Hospice is provided in the home, senior living residence, hospital or Evelyn’s House, our hospice home.

Hospice treats the person, not the disease

An entire team of specially trained individuals is there for both the patient and family, while providing the best medical, emotional and spiritual support available. Staff includes:

  • Registered nurses to assess needs, educate the patient and family, and coordinate comfort care
  • Chaplain to guide the patient and family through the crisis and act as spiritual caregiver, companion and communicator
  • Certified home health aides/homemakers to assist with personal care and homemaking tasks
  • Medical social workers to connect the family with resources in the community, provide short-term counseling and grief support
  • Trained volunteers provide caregiver relief (running errands, helping with cooking and housekeeping and visiting with the patient and family)
  • Medical director to coordinate the patient’s care with his or her physician
  • Our Perinatal Program helps parents who are expecting the birth of a child with a terminal condition, by creating a bridge of support during the transition from pregnancy to parenthood to bereavement
  • Visits from a music therapist, pet therapist and art therapist to improve mood and lift spirits
  • The "We Honor Veterans" program, which places veteran volunteers with patients who are veterans
  • Counselors and grief specialists
  • Registered dietitians
  • Physical, speech and occupational therapists

Hospice care extends beyond the patient, to the family

Members of the hospice team are on call around the clock to provide comfort and support to the patient, family and caregivers.

BJC Hospice provides grief support to the family through the first year following the loss of their loved one with visits, phone calls, mailings, and our Lumina program's memory videos, memory boxes, scrapbooking and life review video or audio tapes to encourage coping with grief.

BJC Hospice provides grief support meetings and community camps for children, teens and adults, including moms, couples and spouses.

Patient Martin Schweig talks about how the Lumina Life Review Program gave him the chance to create a book capturing his life as a professional photographer.

Through Lumina, he was able to relive his memories and provide his children and grandchildren a better understanding of his unique life.

Programs for children and grandchildren

Children and teens affected by the patient’s illness can participate in special grief programs before and after the death of their loved one. Phone calls, personal visits, art and expressive therapy, and age-appropriate literature are provided by grief counselors. Stepping Stones, a grief camp, is available to children ages 6-12 and Labyrinth, a one-day retreat, is available to teens.

BJC Hospice is the only hospice in the area to provide hospice care for children with life-limiting illness through the WINGS program.

Care that is affordable

Admission to BJC Hospice is based on need rather than ability to pay. Medicare and Medicaid offer benefits for hospice services provided by a certified Medicare/Medicaid hospice, such as BJC Hospice. Many health insurance plans also provide benefits for hospice care. BJC Hospice offers insurance specialists to assist with determining hospice benefits.
