Music Therapy

Our professionally trained and certified music therapists function as members of the interdisciplinary hospice team to implement non-invasive interventions to further enhance a patient’s treatment goals. Through planned and systematic use of evidence-based music therapy interventions paired with music that is meaningful or familiar to the patient, various outcomes are possible and may include:

  • Reduced pain or anxiety
  • Enhanced respiratory comfort
  • Decreased restlessness or agitation
  • Increased communication
  • Decreased social isolation
  • Increased sensory stimulation
  • Improved mood
  • Improved spiritual support

Music therapy has been shown to significantly influence a patient’s perceived effectiveness of treatment and can also have positive outcomes for caregivers, such as:

  • Relaxation for the entire family
  • Meaningful time spent together in a positive and creative way
  • Emotional intimacy between the patient and family

Alison Cole, BJC Hospice music therapist, explains – and sings about – the surprising ways music affects patients.
