BJC Hospice client review

July 12, 2010

Mom and I were so fortunate to have encountered hospice. I have never met two more loving and proficient caregivers than Lawana and Olfa. They made Mom comfortable, and then they talked to me and made me comfortable. I was informed of everything and they knew exactly what to do. They went far and above their duty, and their care is such a good reflection of BJC. Our doctor insisted on BJC, and now I know why. I will recommend BJC Hospice to everyone who might need their service. My sister-in-law was in hospice in Florida and her nurses never came into her room to explain things to us.

Thanks  for your service and love you gave to Jeanette. She really appreciated all that hospice workers did for her and the love that you gave her.

I especially want to thank Lawana for the care and kindness that you gave. Jeanette and I  always looked forward to your kind attention and support when you came to the house.

To BJC Hospice staff, especially Marina and Barbara: Thank you for the care you gave my dad. You gave him the respect and dignity he needed even in his last hours. Marina was kind and comforting. Barbara, thank you for being here when dad passed, it helped us a lot. The dignity you gave him after he passed was so appreciated. Thank you for preparing me for his passing. I know he is in a better place now.

My family and I appreciate the wonderful support and care my mother, Ruby, received over the past year. I have been in awe of the kindness and empathy displayed from each member of the team assigned to our case. We were surrounded by professionals who were not afraid to show they cared and understood while we went through a roller coaster of health issues for my mother.

Debbie and Angela, the nurses who came to my home, never failed to treat my mother with such honor and respect, one would’ve thought they were family friends. Both gave calm advice, listened to my tearful fears of the future and showed love no matter how many cases they had or how difficult their day.

Katie, the social worker, provided a much needed listening ear for my mother and me. She had a way of asking just the right question to help me address the difficult issues I was facing. Katie was comfortable being quiet, a gift which also helped me feel comfortable in sharing my feelings and thoughts.

Robyn, the massage therapist, was a bright spot in Ruby’s day. Her gentleness as she worked on Ruby’s frozen, stiff limbs eased my mother’s anxieties and pain.

Crystal, the music therapist, also provided comfort as she sang hymns to soothe Ruby’s loneliness. Susan, the chaplain, also shared her sweet voice in singing old Methodist hymns for Ruby from the very hymnal Ruby used as a church pianist.

Reni, the aide who gave Ruby baths twice a week, provided a service we take for granted, being clean. Ruby never felt afraid in Reni’s care.

Ruby’s sharp mind, trapped in a body no longer responsive to her, craved interaction and challenges. Emily and other volunteers gave Ruby something to look forward to and made her feel special.

In addition to all of the professional nursing care, the medicines, the check-ups and the therapy, she also had the surprise of handmade cards from children and a handmade wrap from one young mother expecting her second child.

I will continue to tell people how wonderful BJC Hospice has been this past year. I feel honored my home had such sacrificing professionals enter daily. Ruby’s team never lost sight of their mission: to serve and comfort the dying. How blessed we have been!

Being associated with the medical school of Washington University, I’m keenly aware of BJC and the many fine staff who work there. I’ve noticed with special interest BJC’s recent TV ad campaign which shows the faces of individual BJC employees and their promise to make healthcare better. I must say that the every day effort of the staff of BJC Hospice speaks volumes about that effort and at least in the opinion of my wife and I, their dedicated and caring work was the best advertisement BJC could hope for. I know that for years to come my wife will be extolling the virtues of BJC Hospice to anyone who might care to listen. She’s a fan for life.

For my part, I wish to commend these fine women for their sincere and heart-felt service. It is all too rare today that you encounter such dedication. These ladies “walked the talk.” I had the real sense from these women that this wasn’t just a job, but a mission. I can’t think of higher praise to give.

I want to thank everyone at BJC Hospice for the way they took care of my father. From the very first day it felt like I had an extended family. It was Lydia, Lisa, Shelia, Sharon and the rest of the hospice team that kept my father alive and took very good care of him. Not only did they take care of dad, they showed support for the entire family. From the people that answered the phone to the people that came to see dad, they did an exceptional job. Thank you and God bless all of you.

To all the BJC Hospice staff:

My family and I would like to thank you all for everything that you did for my mother and me. You made my mother’s last days here so much easier and painless. I give a very special thanks to all of you because without you, I don’t know what we would have done.

We would like to thank the BJC Hospice workers who came to our house and had a hand in helping our mother, Ella, in her final days. Thank you so very much for your support, guidance, words of wisdom, encouragement and help in every step that you all took to make it as comfortable as possible for Ella. You all helped make it possible for Ella to live amongst her family in her final days. We were so glad and proud that she was able to remain in our home with her family. It was a happy ending for a very difficult time. Sorry we can’t remember each and everyone of you by name, but we thank you from the bottom of our hearts..

Thank you all again for helping us and may you continue to do the great work you do for others in their time of need.
