Sale of Handmade Blankets Benefits Hospice Patients
What began as part of a Bat Mitzvah project for 13-year-old volunteer Samantha Shanker has become a mission. Samantha and her fellow volunteers create soft, fleece blankets to give to patients. The blankets also are available for purchase with the proceeds benefiting hospice programs.
One side of the blanket is a solid color while the other sheet is printed in a fun pattern. A note written by the volunteers hangs from the tie-off and reads, “This blanket was tied with a prayer. May it bring you comfort.”
Finished blankets are presented to hospice patients to use as a lap throw. “More than 500 blankets have been made and donated,” says Eileen Spinner, volunteer coordinator. “Our volunteers are incredible. They spend countless hours helping to make the hospice experience warm and loving.”
